VIDEO PRODUCTIONS

2011 is the 25th anniversary of Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. For the weekend-long celebration, the Communications Technology department provided a one hour documentary video about the history of Holy Cross. Last years grade 12 class already started the project by interviewing past and present teachers and past students, while it was our task to interview current students and select the best clips and create the documentary in Final Cut pro. The first task for us was to get together in groups of three and each group member had to specialize on one skill, filming, audio, or being the reporter. I was the reporter of my group and my task was it to ask the questions in the interview and coordinate the group and select the best clips. It was my responsibility that our end result contained everything it had to contain and was in perfect shape. Every student had to think of answers to nine different questions about Holy Cross and got interviewed by another group. Once everything was recorded, each group got assigned one question, and my task was it to select the best answers to this question from all the interviews that were filmed this and last year.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Personal Logo

To create my personal logo, I used the graphic design software Adobe Illustrator that lets the user create shapes with the help of vectors. For my logo, I first wrote out my name by putting together not connected sticks. The single sticks make the design look a bit edgy. I added the first letter of my last name to my first name to create an effect of framing. I selected a style from the, from Adobe Illustratior provided style library for my writing to make the writing look a bit wavy and interesting. I then put a frame around all the letters using the pen tool, that automatically connects the lines you draw and helps you draw straight lines, and selected another style from the style library to fill it. I picked red, yellow, and blue fading into each other as the filling colours because they are the colours of a sunset. On my view my logo brings across a feeling of relaxation and freedom and has a modern, innovative style.

Holy Cross 25th Anniversary DVD Case Cover

As it is the 25th anniversary of Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School this year, we had the exercise in class to design the case cover for a documentary about Holy Cross and how our school has developed the past 25 years that we produced in class as well. This case cover was designed in Adobe Photoshop. For my case cover design, I decided to use a green background, as the school colours are green and silver, and green is brighter and more standing out than grey. I used the brush tool to paint the background in green, but made the brush be the shape of leaves to make the background look uneven. On the front side of the cover I have the 25th anniversary logo in addition to the name of my school. This is innitial information that the buyer of the DVD needs to know. For the back of the case I decided to show different pictures of Holy Cross and it's students from today and 25 years ago. These pictures show the strengths of Holy Cross, the academics, the school spirit, the sports, and the tech department. Underneth the picture collage there is Holy Cross' motto: Once a Crusader, Always a Crusader.

Artist Introduction

My name is Sophie Krohn and I am a grade 11 student at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in Kingston, Ontario. I am currently taking grade 12 Communications Technology this semester after taking Grade 11 Communications Technology last semester. Communications Technology is a class that studies different areas of media including video productions, animation, web page design, audio productions, graphic design, journalism and photography. When I took Com Tech for the first time, I was overwhelmed by the technology that Holy Cross offers in the tech department, as I am international student from Germany and have never been able to take any class like this. This is why I decided to already take the grade 12 course in my second semester of grade 11 directly after taking the grade 11 course. I see Com Tech as a great opportunity for me to discover interest in things that I would have never thought I was good at and improve my media production skills. My favourite part about Communications Technology is that we cover a variety of different areas and learn how to work with programs that most of us will need when they go off to college and university like Adobe Photoshop for photography, Adobe Illustrator for graphic design and Final Cut pro for video productions. I was nominated for this years “Photography & Graphic Design” Genesis Award and ranked second in a local graphic design contest by the Whig Standard. I also took part in this years Com Tech New York trip, focussing on exploring different media related sights in New York City. I discovered my interest in media very early as my father works for a big media corporation in Germany. Knowing that video production is something that I could picture myself going into after graduating from high school, I applied for an student internship at “filmzeit”, a German movie production company, where i did a 3 weeks internship in grade 10. After finishing grade 11 at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, I am going to go back to Germany for my last two years of high school. My plans for after high school are to go into business focussed on media and media science.
